What is sexual orientation?
Sexual orientation is an individual's emotional, romantic, physical, and/or spiritual attraction to another person, based on gender identity or expression. It can be heterosexual (attraction to opposite gender), homosexual (same gender) or bisexual (both genders). It may also include non-binary identities such as pansexual, omnisexual, queer, asexual, etc.
Catholic teaching on sexual orientation
The Roman Catholic Church teaches that same-sex attraction is a disorder or temptation, forbidden for Catholics to act upon. Marriage is considered between one man and one woman, and any deviation from this norm is a sin. The Catholic church has historically condemned homosexuality as "intrinsically disordered", although some current clergy members have moderated their stance.
Brazilian culture and religion
Brazil has the largest population of Catholics in the world, and many Brazilians consider themselves religious.
Catholicism is often mixed with African traditions, indigenous beliefs, and other cultural influences, creating a unique blend of Christianity in Latin America. Sexuality is a taboo subject in Brazil, and open discussions about it are rare.
Perceptions of LGBTQ+ individuals in Brazil
Despite being home to large numbers of people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ+), Brazil does not have legal protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Many Brazilians hold negative views towards LGBTQ+ people, believing they are immoral or deviant. Some conservative politicians have tried to restrict access to gender reassignment surgery, and anti-gay violence remains high.
Individual experiences with Catholicism and sexual identity
Individuals' experiences with Catholicism can vary greatly depending on personal beliefs, family dynamics, community support, and societal pressure. Some may feel that their faith requires them to suppress their sexual identity, while others find ways to reconcile their beliefs with their sexual orientation. Others leave the church altogether due to its teachings on sexuality.
How does Catholic teaching influence perceptions of sexual orientation in Brazil, and how do individuals reconcile personal identity with religious expectations?
In Brazil, Catholicism is one of the most widely practiced religions, with 64. 6% of the population identifying as Catholic. The religion has deeply ingrained norms regarding gender roles and sexuality that can be challenging for people who identify as LGBTQ+ to navigate, especially if they are not open about their sexual orientation.
