BISEXUAL REPRESENTATION IMPACTS YOUNG PEOPLE'S IDENTITIES | MEDIAS ROLE IN SHAPING SEXUAL IDENTITY

2 min read Bisexual

There has been an increase in media representation of bisexual individuals, both positive and negative.

Much of this representation can be problematic and reinforce harmful stereotypes that may impact how young people view themselves. Adolescence is a critical time for developing one's identity, and media depictions can play a significant role in shaping that identity. This article will explore the ways in which media portrayals influence adolescent bisexual identity, self-concept, and internalized stereotypes.

The term "bisexual" refers to a person who experiences romantic, emotional, and/or sexual attraction towards more than one gender. While bisexuals make up approximately half of the LGBTQ+ population, they are often underrepresented in mainstream media. When bisexual characters do appear, they are often portrayed as promiscuous or confused about their sexuality, leading to negative stereotyping.

In the TV show "Glee," the character Santana is presented as being sexually attracted to men and women but ultimately chooses to marry a man. This type of storyline suggests that bisexuality is something to overcome rather than embrace, which can be detrimental to young people exploring their own sexuality.

Media representations of bisexuality are often lacking in diversity, with most portrayals focusing on white, cisgender, able-bodied, and middle-class individuals. This can lead to marginalization and erasure of other groups within the community, such as those who identify as transgender, non-binary, or disabled. It also reinforces the idea that bisexuality is only acceptable if it aligns with societal norms of beauty and privilege.

Some media portrayals are positive and affirming for bisexual youth. The Netflix series "Bloom Into You" features a high school girl named Yuu Koito struggling with her feelings for her female friend and eventual relationship with another woman. This representation offers hope and validation for young viewers questioning their own identity. Similarly, the film "Booksmart" depicts two girls falling in love at prom without making a big deal out of their bisexuality, normalizing it as just one part of who they are.

Media portrayals of bisexuality can have both negative and positive effects on adolescent identity development. By offering diverse and affirming representations, we can work towards reducing stigma and increasing understanding of this underrepresented community.

There is still much work to be done to ensure that all young people feel seen and validated in their identities.

How do media portrayals influence adolescent bisexual identity, self-concept, and internalized stereotypes?

Many media outlets have been criticized for their depictions of people who identify as bisexual. While some show positive representation, there is also a history of negative stereotyping, such as presenting bisexuals as promiscuous, confused, and unable to make decisions about their sexuality.
