BISEXUAL IDENTITY AND ITS PORTRAYAL IN MEDIA: A LOOK AT MISREPRESENTATION

2 min read Bisexual

Bisexuals are often represented in media as either "not really gay" or simply "gay," but they rarely get to have their own representation because of how society views them. Bisexuals face a unique challenge when it comes to dating because they must navigate between straight and LGBTQ+ communities and find partners who accept their identity without making assumptions about what kind of relationship they want.

In movies and TV shows, bisexual characters are typically portrayed as confused or promiscuous, which reinforces negative stereotypes about bisexual individuals. In addition, many media outlets don't recognize the difference between being bi and pansexual, which further erases bisexual identities.

Netflix recently released a show called "The Politician" that features a bisexual character named James Sullivan who is constantly questioned about his sexuality even though he has been in relationships with both men and women throughout the series. This type of misrepresentation perpetuates harmful stereotypes about bisexuals and contributes to their marginalization within the LGBTQ+ community.

Bisexual people also experience fetishization from both heterosexual and homosexual groups. Heterosexual people may see bisexuals as sexually available due to their openness to different genders while lesbians and gays can view them as not truly queer enough to be included in their community. Both of these perceptions lead to bisexuals feeling isolated and unsupported. They are often made fun of by friends and family members for being "confused" about their sexual orientation or pressured into choosing one side over another. This leads many bisexuals to hide their identity or only come out when they feel safe doing so.

Some bisexual activists have begun to challenge these harmful representations through social media campaigns like BiVisibilityDay. On this day, they raise awareness about the challenges faced by bisexual people and promote positive portrayals of bisexual characters on television shows and movies. Some celebrities have also spoken up about their own experiences as bisexual individuals, such as actor Elliot Page who came out as transgender last year after years of hiding his gender identity.

It's important that we recognize how bisexuals experience dual processes of erasure and fetishization in media representations because it has real consequences for their mental health and well-being. By acknowledging these issues, we can work towards creating more inclusive and supportive environments for all sexualities.

How do bisexual individuals experience the dual process of being fetishized and erased in media representations?

Bisexuals are often fetishized and erased in media representation due to their identity not being easily classified as either straight or gay. This can lead to both positive and negative experiences for them. On one hand, it may be seen as empowering to see themselves represented positively in popular culture; however, on the other hand, they may also face discrimination and exclusion based on these stereotypes.
