BISEXUAL IDENTITY: A CONTINUOUS NEGOTIATION OR STATIC STATE? EXPLORING AUTHENTICITY AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELLBEING

2 min read Bisexual

Bisexual identity is defined as "a romantic and/or sexual attraction to people of more than one gender". It is an umbrella term for individuals who have attractions to both men and women. Bisexuals can be attracted to cisgender, transgender, nonbinary, or intersex individuals.

I will explore how authenticity is negotiated within the context of bisexual identity. Is it a static state or a dynamic process? Can you ever truly be your authentic self when it comes to sexual orientation? This question has been debated for years among researchers and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The concept of 'authentic' refers to being true to oneself. In this case, the idea that someone should act according to their innate sexual desires.

Bisexual individuals often face pressure from society and their communities to choose one side. They are told they must either identify as gay or straight, rather than acknowledging their bisexuality.

Some may date heterosexually but privately engage in same-sex relations. Others may publicly date gays while secretly having relationships with women. These behaviors demonstrate how bisexuals navigate between conflicting identities.

Some argue that this constant negotiation harms bisexuals by creating confusion about their sexuality. One study found that people who identify as bi experience lower levels of psychological well-being than those who identify as exclusively gay or lesbian. Another study suggested that bisexual individuals struggle to establish intimate connections because of stigma surrounding their identity.

Some believe that bisexuals can find peace by coming out and embracing both sides of themselves. By doing so, they gain more freedom and acceptance from others. Some bisexuals have even argued that labeling oneself as such opens up new possibilities for romantic and sexual encounters.

Whether bisexual existence is a continuous negotiation or a static state depends on individual experiences and circumstances. The key is understanding that authenticity is a process, not a destination. It involves reflection, self-awareness, and a willingness to challenge societal norms. Bisexual individuals need support and space to explore their identities without judgment or shame.

Is authenticity a static state or a continuous negotiation in bisexual existence?

Authenticity is an ongoing process that involves constant self-reflection and negotiation for bisexual individuals. Bisexuals may face pressure from society to identify as gay, lesbian, or heterosexual, but they must resist this pressure and remain true to their sexual orientation. This requires introspection, confidence in one's identity, and openness to new experiences and relationships with people of all genders.
