AN EXPLORATION OF SEXUAL JEALOUSY, INTIMACY, AND MARITAL STABILITY IN POLYGAMY THROUGH RELIGIOUS FRAMING

2 min read Theology

Polygamy is an ancient practice that has existed for centuries across various cultures and religions. It involves having multiple spouses simultaneously. This practice raises several issues related to intimacy, including sexual jealousy, sexual satisfaction, and marital stability. Religious framing influences these aspects significantly. To begin with, religious belief systems play a crucial role in shaping perceptions about polygamy.

Monogamous couples believe that their marriage is exclusive, while polygamists see it as open to additional partners. As such, they do not experience jealousy when their partner engages in extramarital affairs because they already know that their partner will always return home. Conversely, people who view marriage as monogamous feel threatened when their partner strays outside the marriage, leading to intense jealousy. Secondly, religious teachings affect how individuals perceive their sexual satisfaction. Some faiths promote sexual pleasure within marriage while others frown upon it. In some cases, the husband or wife may be allowed to have multiple sexual partners but must avoid sex acts prohibited by religion. Therefore, those who follow this teaching might not experience jealousy since they expect their partner to have other lovers. On the contrary, those who adhere to the former viewpoint would suffer from sexual dissatisfaction if their partner fails to meet their needs. Lastly, religion shapes marital stability. Faiths that permit polygamy acknowledge that married life is difficult, hence, encourage individuals to marry more than one person to achieve marital harmony.

Monogamist religions consider the act of having many wives unholy and thus forbid it. This means that those who subscribe to it are likely to break up if one party decides to practice polygamy without the consent of the other.

Religion plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions about polygamy, sexuality, and relationships. While it influences sexual jealousy, satisfaction, and marital stability differently for different groups, it generally allows polygamy.

How does religious framing of polygamy influence sexual jealousy, satisfaction, and marital stability?

There is evidence that religiously sanctioned polygynous (one man, multiple wives) marriage can have positive outcomes for both men and women within the context of marriage, including increased sexual satisfaction and decreased rates of divorce (Cooke et al. , 2014).
