AN ETHNOGRAPHIC EXPLORATION OF CULTURAL INFLUENCES ON URUGUAYAN SEXUAL BEHAVIOR: A QUALITATIVE STUDY

Sexual behavior has always been an integral part of human life and is influenced by various factors such as culture, religion, and social norms. In Uruguay, like most Latin American countries, there are distinct cultural and religious beliefs that influence how people perceive and practice sex. This paper will explore the ethics of sexual behavior in the Uruguayan religious context and discuss how these behaviors are regulated by society.

Uruguayan culture is characterized by a blend of European and indigenous influences, which have shaped its values and traditions. One of the main influences is Catholicism, which has played a significant role in shaping attitudes towards sex and sexuality. The church teaches that sex should be reserved for marriage, and that premarital sex is immoral.

This does not mean that all Uruguayans follow these teachings strictly, as many still engage in premarital sex, particularly among young adults.

In addition to Catholicism, other religions also influence sexual behavior in Uruguay.

Islam prohibits adultery, extramarital affairs, homosexuality, and same-sex marriages, while Judaism encourages monogamy and abstinence before marriage. These religions may also influence the way individuals interact with one another sexually, especially within families or communities.

Societal norms and expectations regarding sexual behavior vary across different groups within Uruguay.

Middle-class urbanites may view sex as something private and intimate, while rural populations tend to approach it more openly. Some social classes also place greater emphasis on traditional gender roles, where men are expected to take an active role in initiating sex, while women are expected to be passive.

Sexual behavior is framed ethically in Uruguay within a religious context that emphasizes monogamy, fidelity, and respect for others. Socially, there are some cultural expectations regarding when and how people express their sexuality, but these vary depending on factors such as class, age, and location.

How is sexual behavior ethically framed and socially regulated within Uruguayan religious contexts?

The issue of sexuality is often perceived as highly personal and private matter that should not be discussed publicly due to social norms and cultural beliefs. It has been reported that most Uruguayans believe it is acceptable for unmarried couples to live together before marriage but feel uneasy discussing this openly with others due to potential judgments from society (Torres, 2019).
