A LOOK AT RELIGIOUS BELIEF SYSTEMS CONCEPTION OF MORALITY: HOW SUPPRESSED EMOTIONS LEAD TO NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES

2 min read Theology

Religious belief systems are based on the concept of divine law that prescribes rules for human behavior. These laws are believed to be revealed from God through scriptures or prophets who have been appointed by him.

The idea of moral hierarchy is central to these religions where some behaviors are considered more morally wrong than others. This hierarchy prioritizes restraint over responsiveness which means that people must control their impulses before acting upon them.

If someone feels an attraction towards another person of the same gender but is forbidden to act on it due to religious beliefs, they will have to resist the temptation. Similarly, if one needs to suppress their anger or jealousy towards someone else, they will have to restrain themselves from expressing it openly.

This emphasis on restraint can lead to suppression of emotions and feelings, which may result in negative consequences such as increased stress levels, anxiety, depression, and even physical health problems. On the other hand, responsive actions allow individuals to respond to situations in an appropriate manner without suppressing their emotions. This way, individuals feel free to express themselves fully and openly without fear of judgment or punishment.

This hierarchical approach also creates a sense of superiority and inferiority among different groups within the society. Those who follow the moral guidelines are seen as virtuous while those who violate them are regarded as immoral. It leads to discrimination and prejudice against certain communities based on their beliefs and practices.

In many societies, women's sexuality is perceived negatively, leading to their marginalization and oppression. The emphasis on restraint rather than responsiveness reinforces patriarchy where men are expected to be in charge of controlling women's behavior, including their sexual expression.

The focus on religious morality prioritizing restraint over responsiveness has led to harmful consequences for individuals and society as a whole. It limits personal growth, freedom of expression, and social justice by perpetuating stereotypes and discrimination. While religion provides guidance on ethics and morals, we should not blindly follow these rules without questioning their impact on our lives. Instead, we must strive to find balance between restraint and responsiveness that promotes individual fulfillment and collective well-being.

How does religious moral hierarchy privilege restraint over responsiveness?

The religious belief system of most people is centered on rules and norms that govern their behaviors in society as individuals. These rules and norms are created by religious leaders and scholars and have been passed down from generation to generation. The moral hierarchy present in religion focuses on restraint rather than responsiveness. In most religions, there are specific dos and don'ts that should be followed by adherents.
