A LOOK AT HOW DIFFERENT RELIGIOUS VIEWS ON SEXUAL PLEASURE SHAPE BEHAVIOR

2 min read Theology

Sexual pleasure is an experience that has been present throughout human history, but it is framed differently depending on one's religion.

Some religions see sex as sinful unless it occurs within the confines of marriage while others see it as necessary for procreation. This paper will explore how different religions view sexual pleasure to understand how they influence their followers' behaviors.

In Christianity, sex is primarily seen as sacred and reserved for married couples who practice abstinence outside of marriage. The Bible describes sex as God-given and intended for procreation, so premarital sex, masturbation, and homosexuality are considered immoral sins.

Some denominations allow birth control methods to prevent unwanted pregnancies. In Islam, sex is only acceptable between husband and wife for the purpose of reproduction; however, polygamy is permitted under certain conditions.

In Judaism, sex is viewed as a natural part of life but must be done discreetly and privately. Homosexuality is forbidden, as is bestiality and incest. Women are expected to cover themselves when in public or around men who are not their husbands. Buddhists believe that sexual desire can lead to attachment which leads to suffering, so monks take vows of celibacy. Hinduism views sex as a way to connect with each other spiritually but condemns homosexuality and premarital sex.

The Hare Krishnas, also known as Vaishnavites, believe in renunciation from material pleasures like sex because they want to achieve spiritual oneness with God. They use sexual intercourse only for procreation and only within marriage. The Amish community sees sex as sinful, and members must marry before engaging in it.

Sikhism encourages people to be moderate in all aspects of life, including sex, but homosexuality is frowned upon. Mormons view sex as sacred within marriage but do not practice it outside of wedlock. Shintoism believes that sex should be used responsibly and with respect for one's partner. Pagans tend to focus more on personal freedom than religious rules, allowing followers to express their sexuality without judgment.

Religious discourse frames sexual pleasure as morally conditioned by each religion's beliefs about its purpose and function. Some religions see it as sacred while others condemn it entirely.

Understanding how these beliefs affect behavior is essential for those seeking to explore sexuality.
